Watching my mother’s health degrade from severe osteoporosis, I decided at the age of 52, that I should ask my doctor for a DEXA scan. She balked and said I was too young. “We don’t recommend bone scans until after the age of 60,” she told me. I am anything, if not tenacious. I insisted.
When the scan came back with a diagnosis of osteoporosis in my lower spine, I’m not sure who was more surprised, the doctor or I. Having exercised regularly since my mid 20’s, I thought, “this must be a mistake.” The doctor did not order any follow-up tests but simply offered to write me a prescription for a bisphosphonate drug. She frowned at me when I said, “no, thank you,” but I needed to know more.
This was just the beginning of my journey to better bone health. As a health coach, I wanted to learn as much as I could about this condition and, along the way, I realized that helping women like my mother and myself, was where I wanted to take my health coaching practice.
As more and more people lead sedentary lives, and the more our diets are filled with processed foods, the more prevalent this issue will become. My goal is to empower you with the knowledge you need to take charge of your bone health, and make lifestyle changes that will make you stronger and more resilient.You, too, can be a bone babe!
